This distinctive cuff bracelet is English, circa 1870. The pictures best define the beauty and unique design. It is English with hallmarks for Birmingham, date year 1876 and maker's marks of W & Co. This bracelet exemplifies the Aesthetic Movement. In 1854 Commodore Perry established a trade agreement between the US and Japan. This opened the world to the arts of Japan. The use of mixed metal and naturalistic themes favored by the Japanese, was now embraced by the English designers. In this example we have a blend of traditionalism with a central crest pierced by arrows softened by the leaves and vines. The overlay of soft rose gold ornamentation against the silver is very beautiful, as well as time consuming work. The central crest is unadorned and is awaiting personal initials. The bracelet is bold in size, measuring 1 1/2 inches down. The back is unadorned typical of the period of design. It opens and closes securely with a concealed push clasp. The circumference is 7.5 and will accommodate an average wrist. The condition is excellent with minor imperfections. English, circa 1870 and lovely. |
