Superb Antique Shakudo Earrings Circa 1890
The art of Shakudo has been appreciated by historians and collectors of fine art. Shakudo is an alloy of approximately 96% copper and 4% gold and when patinated forms a fine gray/black. In the art of Japanese Shakudo the artisans used their skill to adorn the swords of the Samurai warriors. After the Haitorei Edict in 1877, which ultimately ended the culture of the Samurai, the craftsman found themselves out of work and resorted to other means of economic survival. They created jewels for export and items for the women to adorn their kimonos and their hair.

The art of Shakudo is appreciated for its distinctive beauty, its attention to detail, its simplicity. For centuries, the work was of the highest standard, worthy of the consideration of the Emperor.

This example has many interesting details. Is the beauty in art of the frame, or the perfection of the art work itself? Each earring has a central Shakudo plaque decorated with gold raised designs of birds foraging wildflowers. It is a popular theme in Shakudo and so beautifully executed in this example. One flower in each earring is copper, serving as the contrast of mixed metal. The birds and flowers are engraved, all forming a design and decoration of beautiful proportions. The Shakudo was then custom framed in 14k gold to create the perfect composition of an earring. Almost Georgian in inspiration, yet having an Asian sensibility, the frame is unique. It fastens back to front, and in itself is a fine sculpture, aesthetically beautiful from every angle. There are three touchmarks on each earring and a mark, B-59.

They measure 2 inches long x 5/8 across. Excellent condition and simply beautiful. Japanese, circa 1890
