This ring is very beautifully designed in 18k with vibrant chrysoberyls. It is circa 1800 and is from the Iberian Peninsula. Both Spain and Portugal utilized and treasured these mellow pale yellow/green stones in their jewelry. Portugal had access to the treasure trove of Brazil and was able to obtain more of the true gemstones, while Spain created many fantastic paste copies. This example is quite uniquely designed with a central flower head created with faceted chrysoberyls. The stones are closed back, and foiled, typical of the period and set in silver, crimped rub over collets. The center stone is a vibrant tourmaline, especially chosen as an accent, and set in a scalloped gold collet finished with hand engraving. Two of the chrysoberyls have natural inclusions visible with a 10X loop. The sides too are spectacular, as they are flower heads, or perhaps sunflowers, which are suspended on top of an engraved stem. The center of these flowers have small rose cut diamonds. The shank is part of the artistry too, as it gracefully tapers to the back. The gold work is smooth and finely rendered. The ring measures 5 3/4 US and can be sized. The center flower measures 5/8 down x 6/8 across. This ring is in excellent, original condition. It would grace any hand today as it did over 200 years ago. One of a kind, most likely, Portuguese, circa 1800. |
