This gold moonstone necklace is Victorian, circa 1900. It is elegantly designed, with beautiful cabachon moonstones interspersed with small faceted rubies. The moonstones are clear with flashes of blue exhibiting adularescence. The term adularescence, is that play of light that crosses the stone as light passes through. So magical in appearance, the Romans believed it was formed from drops of moonlight. It is seen on the finest gem quality stones, and it is this quality that distinguishes it from the modern counterparts. The necklace is 15k and has a wash of 18k giving it a rich yellow patina. The moonstones are all set in substantial bezels, as are the rubies. The bottom drop has some of the gilding worn and the bezel has more of a rose hue. This is mentioned for accuracy and not visible when worn. The chain terminates with an original "S" clasp. It measures 14 3/4 inches long with a 2 inch central drop. The center section measures almost 3 inches across. The large moonstone measures 7/8 long x slightly over 1/2 inches across. It is dramatic and has a distinctive, ethereal quality. Easily worn for casual or dress. Excellent condition. English, circa 1900. |
