| This ring is Georgian, circa 1790. It has a central foiled back amethyst set in crimped rub over collets. Two collet set, bright mine cut diamonds on either side of the amethyst, are nicely detailed with three tiny gold balls. The diamonds are approximately 8 pts each. The amethyst measures approximately 6mm down x 7mm across. The shoulders of the ring are simple and elegantly designed with details typical of the period. They join the central element with tiny balls that complement the top of the ring. The underside of the ring has the characteristic Georgian radiating pattern beneath the amethyst. Long been the favored Royal stone, it is found in the Crown Jewels. Although now readily available, at the time, it was considered a very valuable stone both for its rarity and rich color. The ring is entirely original and in excellent condition. The central stone has some wear on the facets seen only with a 10x loop, as expected with a ring of this age. The gold is 18k and is a size 7 1/2 US. Beautiful worn alone or stacked with other Georgian rings. Understated and lovely...English, circa 1790. | |||||||
