This long silver chain is niello, circa 1890. Quite, striking in its unusual and subtle beauty, it is designed with alternating links of niello and faceted rose gold. According to the book, Victorian Jewelry by Dawes and Davidow, "niello is the process in which a fusion of silver, copper, lead and sulfur is melted and poured on silver." This process can create the geometric patterns favored in France, or the swirling patterns favored in Russia. " This example is quite fine, as it represents the simple beauty created by mixing metals. The pattern created here is striping in the silver which provides a beautiful contrast with the rose gold links. The chain is long and dramatic measuring 60 inches x slightly less that 2/8 wide. It has been joined with an unusual locket of the same period. The locket , while not niello, has the same mix of rose gold overlay and silver found on the chain. It looks sensational together. The locket measures without the bail, 1 1/4 inches long x 1 1/8 inches wide. It is the first I have seen with such hand work and design. Both sides of the locket have different motifs and one side has pierced silver work as seen in the photos. There is slight wear on the edges of the locket, commensurate with age, but overall excellent condition. It detaches from the chain and can be worn separately too. The chain has a spring ring which opens so it allows the chain to be doubled or tripled around the neck. I haven't had a niello chain in such great condition and length for many, many years. It has a mark of 800 silver as well as maker's mark on a terminating link of chain. Beautiful as well as versatile, circa 1890 and most likely French in origin. |
