Extraordinary Antique Victorian Grotesque Faces Chain
This chain is the finest I have come across in many, many years. It is Etruscan Revival, circa 1890. Rendered in a rich 18k gold patina, it is designed with 12 unique grotesque faces. Each face is different and is done in repousse, finished front and back. I am grateful to a collector who has just informed me that the faces are actual replicas of Greek and Roman theater masks, which makes this necklace more unique. The faces are are joined on each end by a small gold decorated bead.

The chain has lightly textured links and measures 60 inches long X 1/16th of an inch(2 cm). The 12 unique faces are all slightly different sizes, but approximate 1/2 x 1/2 inches. The chain is 15 dwt. The gold work is superior and the entire conception imaginative and elegant. The chain can be worn doubled, tripled, or one wrap around the neck and the extra length worn long. It terminates in a bale. If desired, the chain can be attached to the top of the bale and a pendant of choice could then be attached. The condition is excellent. Some very slight patina darkening as expected with age, and part of the beauty.

It is a one a of a kind, and I have never come across anything remotely similar. I have seen small brooches with grotesque faces from this period, but never a chain of this stature. Truly wonderful, circa 1890
