This antique gold necklace is circa 1860. It is designed in the Etruscan Revival manner. The archeological excavations at Pompeii and Herculeum unearthed treasures, and brought with it renewed interest in the stunning Etruscan gold work. The term of Etruscan Revival was used to define this period, and famous jewelers such as Castellani, tried to emulate the designs and craftsmanship. This necklace is classical in inspiration, and perhaps one of the finest in execution that I have ever had the pleasure to offer for sale. The necklace is composed of 46, 8.5mm beads, each retaining the original, rich, beautiful patina. The beads are quite incredible as the granulation and fine wire work is achieved in patterns. All the Etruscan bead necklaces I have sold had beads with random patterned wire work. In this example, each bead matches and the work is precision. The art of granulation and fine wire work has been executed by a master goldsmith, having been applied without the use of solder. The beads are hollow and feather light, rendered in 14k gold and finished with a high carat 18k gold wash characteristic of the period of design. The visual and tactile texture of each bead is very beautiful. The result is an impressive, astonishing piece of wearable art. The necklace retains the original push clasp and has an added safety chain. It measures 21.5 inches. One bead has a minor indentation which is not noticeable when worn, and several pin dots on other beads visible under magnification. Superb and rare, Victorian circa 1860. |
