This cuff bracelet is English, circa 1880. It is more unusual than most, having fine pierced work creating vines, leaves and flowers. The use of multi- colored gold used with silver, became popular when the art of Japan was widely introduced in Europe. Commodore Perry credited with bringing about a trade agreement with Japan also opened the world to Japanese art and culture. In this example the pierced silver work is superb as is the hand engraving. The open work adds not only light, but looks unique against the skin or on fabric. The cannonball accents on the top and bottom and the geometric engraving on either side adds visual interest. The bracelet is in very good condition . There are several cannonballs that have tiny dings as does the back surface. It measures 7 1.2 inches x 1 1/8 and should comfortable fit an average wrist. This is a fine example superb craftsmanship and of the Aesthetic Movement in England. England, circa 1880 |
