Impressive and long, these garnet earrings are English, circa 1810. They are designed with foiled back, flat cut garnets, all set in hand crimped settings. The almondine garnets have a rich pink to cranberry color. They are flat cut as was typical of the period and have tiny facets around the perimeter of each stone. The reflection of light adds a subtle beauty and characteristic variation of hue. I have had Georgian earrings of this design only once before, as finding long Georgian earrings seem to be getting all the more difficult. The earrings are light on the ear and suitable for day or evening wear. The cascading leaves terminate with a pansy and all four sections articulate. The pansy was a popular flower used to symbolize remembrance. Given as love tokens, these are as wonderful and sentimental today, as they were two hundred years ago. The condition is excellent and all stones are beautifully cut and faceted. It is completely original except for the addition of new gold 14k ear wires. The earrings, set in low carat gold, have a warm mellow rose hue. Almost no gold shows from the front except for the detailing around the stones. They measure a graceful 1 7/8 from the top wire x 5/8 across the pansy. Wonderful, Georgian earrings, circa 1810. |
