Antique Sterling English Locket Circa 1880
This antique sterling locket is English, circa 1880. The Aesthetic Movement is evident in this lovely locket with its multi- colors and naturalistic theme. This movement was born with the trade agreement made between the United States and Japan. Japanese art found a new market and silversmiths in England eagerly designed jewelry for the populace that desired this new look. This locket is typical of the fashion, finely detailed with vines and a flower motif. The leaves are finished in a yellow gold and the vine in a rose vermeil, which was then hand engraved. The cannonballs decorate the perimeter of the locket and even the bale which is unusual. It opens to reveal the original bezels and replacement acrylic liners to house photos. The condition is excellent. The back/front has a few microscopic pin head depressions. It measures 2 1/4 inches with the bale and 1 3/4 inches long x 1 3/8 across without the bale. Lovely worn with a long or short cord, a silver or gold chain. England, circa 1880
