This sterling silver Victorian bracelet is designed with the classical strap and buckle motif. This design was very popular in England in the 1880's and is bold and distinctive. The buckle and strap are decorated with tiny "cannonballs" and the strap itself as well as the backdrop is decorated with hand engraved maple leaves. The maple leaf has long been the symbol of strength, courage, protection and long life. It is a popular motif found on jewelry from this period. The back of the bracelet and the buckle on the front are not engraved and retain a high polish. The bracelet opens and closes with a concealed and secure push clasp. It is in very good condition with tiny surface scratches and negligible dings on the smooth back side. The bracelet could be polished if desired, but I left the original lovely patina. It has hallmarks for Birmingham 1884 and a maker's mark of R.J.D. It measures slightly over 7 inches in circumference and is 1 1/4 inches wide. It should comfortably fit an average wrist. The bracelet is classically designed in the English tradition. Circa 1884 and lovely! |
