Antique Silver Niello Lorgnette Circa 1900
This lorgnette, is silver designed with the process of Niello. This process was used for centuries, but had renewed interest in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. According to the book Victorian Jewelry by Dawes and Davidov, "niello is a process in which a fusion of silver, copper, lead and sulphur is melted and poured on silver." The process creates patterns in geometric designs favored in France or swirling intricate patterns often found in Russian jewelry of the period.

In this example the pattern is a classical checkerboard. Similar can be seen on page 50 of the Victorian Jewelry Book, by Dawes and Davidov. The lorgnette is large measuring 5 1/4 inches long x 1 3/4 inches across the spectacles. The glasses spring open when the small silver ring on the handle is pulled down. The glasses can be fitted with regular prescriptions if desired. It is quite stunning worn on a long black cord, or a silver/ gold watch chain. Any long chain would work with the addition of a swivel bail. It is tailored, completely original and in very fine condition. Some negligible wear(photo #3) on one tiny section of the niello, commensurate with use. By the pattern it is most likely French in origin, circa 1900.
