This very fine antique Scottish brooch captures the beauty of Autumn. A medley of colored agates all indigenous to Scotland, have been finely cut and inlaid in silver by a skilled lapidary. The artistry clearly seen in the choice of color and placement of the stones. So finely rendered, a finger running over the top can barely detect one stone from the next, as it is so smooth to the touch. The vast majority of antique Scottish jewelry was done in traditional motifs and fewer in artistic or figural forms. Here is a figural, and one expressed in a strikingly "modern" interpretation. The lines are sleek, with little engraving other than some texture to the branch. The attention is to the agates and the beauty of the form. The brooch is in excellent/pristine condition and measures 2 7/8 x 1 1/2 inches. It is completely original including the C-clasp and T-bar on the reverse. Rare and very lovely. Scottish winds of autumn....circa 1860. |
