This heart pendant is Scottish, circa 1860. The bold smoky quartz heart is surmounted by a beautiful 15k crown. The crown is finely rendered, hand engraved, and decorated with a surround of four fleur de lys. The Auld Alliance between France and Scotland influenced language, architecture and design. Mary, the only legitimate child of King James V was six days old when her father died, making her Queen of Scotland. In 1558 she married the Dauphin of France and became Queen of France for less than a year when her husband died. She returned to Scotland and became Queen after sustaining great personal loss, and the years that followed were terribly tragic. She was beloved by her people and this form of heart, with its fleur de lys, symbolizing the Auld Alliance, has been called the Mary Queen of Scots Heart" Mary's life has been the focus of countless books throughout the centuries and even today, her life and tragic death have been studied and portrayed. In Scotland she is called Queen of Scots, in France, Mary Stuart. This example is like a fine sculpture, well proportioned and beautiful from all sides. Note the identical gold work surrounding front and back. The 15k crown retains a rich, original patina. The heart is large, measuring almost 2 1/2 inches from the top of the O ring x 1 1/4 inches across. Worn as shown on a cord, or joined with a chain, it is piece of jewelry that is symbolic as well as beautiful. It is all original and in excellent condition. These hearts are a passion of mine and I have collected them for many years. This is a superb example of classical elegance, circa 1860 Scotland. |
