This unusual and rare Scottish agate brooch is circa 1880. It is the first and only that I have seen with this inscription. The brooch appears at first to be a mosaic of inlaid stones, but then the letters become clear and the word Clachnacuddin appears. It is created in several time intensive steps, first the silversmith, then the engraver and finally the lapidary. The name is the anglicised version of the Clachna Cudainn, the Highland capital of Iverness. The word is derived from the Gaelic ,a palladium, "the stone of the tub" where washer women would rest their tubs on the way their way to and from the river. Today, the term Clachnacuddin is the name we recognize for the prominent football team of Inverness. This most likely was a commissioned brooch for a prominent individual, given with great sentimentality to adorn the tartan. The medley of colors are created by the perfect placement of native Scottish agates. The engraving is superior as well. The central large faceted stone is a smoky quartz, raised and set with decorative claws. The color of the stone is subtle and blends perfectly with the agates. The composition and craftsmanship is among the best I have seen. The reverse has all original mounts and the original steel pin. It measures 2 1/8 inches. This is a collector's delight, original and in excellent condition. Scotland, circa 1880 |
