Rare Antique Gold Scottish Agate Pin
This form of Scottish brooch is among my favorite. It is called a penannular, or split ring. Used for centuries to secure garments, this brooch appears strikingly modern in its sleek, simple design. It is rendered in 12k gold and set with beautifully chosen agates cut en cabachon. The top is a citrine, finely cut in the form of the native flower of Scotland, the thistle. The other two stones are faceted crystals that are collet set and foil back to reflect the light.

The height of popularity of Scottish jewelry was the during the reign of Queen Victoria. She adored the beauty of the people and the countryside. During her frequent visits to Balmoral Castle, she dressed her children in tartans and she herself wore the beautiful jewelry, so distinctive of the country. Her appreciation of the jewelry was matched by the populace and it actually became difficult to meet the demand.

Most Scottish jewelry is set in silver and finding gold examples quite rare. Of those made in gold, most were in 9k. This example is in 12k with beautiful gold work. The front and back have engraving, but it restrained as not to compete with the beauty of the native agates.

It measures a bold 2 7/8 from the top of the thistle x 2 inches across the circle. The pin is in excellent condition. There is evidence of early reinforcement of the pin stem which is perfectly secure and well done. There is a tiny loop on the back, where a safety chain could be attached if desired.

This form , a penannular, is very rare to find in gold. I have had several in silver, but only this example for sale in gold. The design has stood the test of centuries. Elegant, timeless, historical and the perfect brooch for sweater, jacket, or scarf. Scotland ,circa 1860
