This lovely antique sterling, engraved necklace is circa 1881. It is designed as a collar terminating with a concealed push clasp. The necklace is hand engraved and well detailed. The front has faceted sterling tiny balls accenting the engraved links. The reverse has smooth links with the same tiny balls having a smooth finish to complement the links. There is a mark, called a kite mark, which was used to guarantee the silver content and also provide the date of manufacture. This necklace can be accurately dated August 27, 1881. It measures approximately 18 inches long x 7/8 wide, and would fit an average neck. It is more unusual to find Victorian collars, as most of this period were long with links that attached to a locket. It also has additional historical interest with the added feature of the date mark. It is all original and in excellent condition. The only note is one tiny silver crease on the reverse, smooth side visible in the photo. This is a fine example of 19th century Victorian elegance. |
