| This antique gold locket is American, circa 1890. It is 14k, marked on the interior and on the bail. It is unusually large for lockets of this period measuring 1 5/8 long without the bale x 1 3/8 across. The large size looks equally dramatic worn close to the neck, or worn long on a chain or black cord. Unusual too, is the absence of initials and the fact that the beautiful original rich gold bloom is intact. This color of gold, was created by the addition of mercury to gold during the manufacturing process. Mercury can no longer be used in the creation of modern jewelry. Today, goldsmiths try to approximate this color, but it cannot be truly achieved. The interior bears the original bezels for photos. I have joined the locket with a black cord which terminates with a 14k lobster clasp. It gives this antique heart an interesting contemporary feel. Of course, it can be used with any chain of choice. It is in excellent, all original condition. The proportion, condition and size give this lovely heart distinction. Perfect to present for that special moment, or to make it your own.
