| These earrings were designed in the later part of the 18th century, the age of elegance. They were fashioned in 18k gold and silver and have the pendeloque design, the long dramatic earrings still popular today. These have a light and sculptural quality that distinguishes them from the earrings of the Iberian Penninsula and are most likely French in origin. They have a naturalistic theme with gold leaves that are hand chased and raised flower heads set in silver and encrusted with rose diamonds. The diamonds are all set in rub over collets and closed backs typical of the period. Of note, are the very fine details like the tiny rose diamond set in six leaves on each earring which are almost imperceptible to the naked eye. The diamonds were closed to the light and have the magical glow so prized in early jewelry. They articulate in three sections and were designed as day/night earrings where the top could be separated from the bottom for daytime use. They retain the original back to front wires and a rich, beautiful patina. The condition is extraordinary and they are completely original. They measure a dramatic 3 inches long from the top of the wires x 1 inch across the widest span. The top element alone measures 3/4 long x 1/2 inches across. These are uniquely beautiful. | |||||||||||
