This Victorian Scottish,15k gold amethyst heart pendant is circa 1880. The motif of a heart surmounted with a crown is symbolic of loyalty. In this example, the crown is decorated with two natural pearls, and a central faceted demantoid garnet. The crown is decorated with fleur de lys and the incorporation of this motif was used to signify the Auld Alliance of 1295 between France and Scotland. Mary, the beloved Queen of Scotland grew up in France and when she became the Queen of Scotland she sustained great personal loss, and her life was laced in sadness and tragedy. This form of heart is often called, The Mary Queen of Scots heart. Amethyst has long been used for the color of royalty, and in this pendant it has a rich, deep hue. The heart is faceted front and back, with the back fully faceted as seen in the photos. The crown is engraved front and back and beautifully detailed. The 15k gold crown has a beautiful, original patina, and the antique chain which is 14k,is a perfect complement with the gold. The heart measures 1 1/2 inches long from the top O ring x 3/4 inches across the heart. The chain measures 15.5 inches and is secured with a spring ring. It is all original and in excellent condition. I love these hearts for the beauty of form and for its sentiment. Scotland, circa 1880. |
