This Scottish silver agate bracelet is circa 1860. It is of the finest quality both in design and execution. Each plaque has six agates, individually cut and shaped by a lapidary, then secured and placed on slate. The four corners of each section have a heart. This work is the most time consuming as the beauty is defined by the level of skill and artistry of the lapidary. I have not had a bracelet like this for sale in many years, as they have always been rare to find. The colors are mellow and beautiful as they flow from section to section. The bracelet measures 7 1/2 inches in length. Each plaque varies slightly, with the center measuring 1 1/8 across x 1 inch down. The bracelet terminates with a padlock, original to the bracelet. It measure 1 1/4 inches long x 3/4 inches across. It too, is a work of art as it has four agates that are finely inlaid. The reverse of the padlock is engraved and has gray and brown hair braided together. Obviously together with the heart motif, this was given to a loved one, a daughter or a wife. One tiny edge chip on close scrutiny, otherwise excellent, original condition. Beautiful, rare and wearable. Scotland, circa 1860. |
