This wonderful Scottish agate brooch is most unusual. It has a traditional motif, a strap and garter very popular during the reign of Queen Victoria. In this example the agates are used cleverly disguising the heart motif. Perhaps this was a love token given for a special anniversary or wedding. Rare to find hearts in Scottish jewelry, especially in these traditional brooches originally designed for the men's tartans. In this example, the choice of colorful agates is especially fine as is the hand engraving. Each agate is inlaid and perfectly chosen to blend with opposing colors. The brooch measures 2 5/8 inches long x 2 1/4 inches across. The condition is excellent and the brooch is entirely original. The reverse has all original fittings, T-bar and C-clasp. There are a few tiny, pin point dings on the reverse. The top ring is for the use of a safety chain if desired. This brooch was finely rendered by the hands of a skilled lapidary and silversmith. It is the first strap and garter design I have ever seen utilizing a heart motif. Lovely, unique, timeless, circa 1860. Please read a wonderful new book called Scottish Pebble Jewellery, by Nick Crawford. It can be ordered through Lulu.com |
