This necklace is representative of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Termed a Movement, it was a move towards handcrafted works and individual artistic expression. This necklace is very much like the work and style of Muhrle Bennett. It has a mark of 800 for silver and a touchmark which I cannot decipher. Each link has an amethyst set in bold prongs and set in hand hammered sections. The amethyst too are unusual in their cut, as the top is a cabachon and the bottom of the stone is faceted. This creates a lovely soft reflection of light. There are twisted silver wires in a form reminiscent of a Celtic knot. The clasp is unusual and swivels open and closed to lock. It measures 17 inches long x 3/4 inches wide. The work is well done and the necklace light and comfortable. It lays beautifully on the neck. Most likely Continental in origin, circa 1900. |
