This silver brooch, circa 1910 is designed and executed by Adolf Mayer, a listed Jugendstil silversmith. It is quite spectacular both in size and craftsmanship. It is a classical Mayer piece with his signature mix of color and medium. In this brooch, he utilizes ivory and lapis lazuli. Many of his brooches used carved ivory and here it creates an ornamental flower. The silver is finely hand wrought and hammered. It is bold and sculptural, measuring 3 inches in length including the drop x 2 1/4 inches across. It is signed AM and has a silver content of 900. The marks on the reverse ,Original Handarbeit, means original handicraft. The central mark has his initials AM centered with a tool for silversmithing(looks like a T). This period of design had roots in Denmark as well, with Georg Jensen and other fine craftsman. The Jugenstil Movement describes the Arts and Crafts Movement arising in Germany. The brooch is in excellent condition with a beautiful, original patina. The original C-Clasp has been replaced. It is one of the prettiest examples from this period I have sold. |
