This lovely Scottish agate brooch is circa 1860. It is a rare form to find in Scottish jewelry, as it is a figural brooch rather than the traditional forms used to adorn the tartans. I consider this a form of rare folk art. The harp has long been a popular motif for its symbolism of love and for its graceful form. "By neglect thou ruinest me," or "Je responds a qui me touche"(I reply to him that touches me). Like a sculpture, it has perfect proportions and color. The agates are beautiful and subtle, blending one to the other to perfection. There are three raised carved agates and the others are inlaid, all divided by tiny silver strips almost invisible to the eye. The "strings" are created by fine twisted silver wire. The brooch is entirely original, including the T-Bar and C-clasp on the reverse and the condition is excellent. There are two lines in one bloodstone, but they are natural inclusions, not damages. The loop seen on the back is for a safety chain and can easily be removed. The brooch measures a bold 2 3/8 inches down x 1 1/2 across. It is one of a kind and rare. |
