This brooch is Scottish, circa 1840. It is silver, and set with a beautiful blend of native agates. It is designed as a penannular, or "broken ring." This is an early design of a brooch with exquisite engraving, front and back. The top stone is a cairngorm which is faceted and foil back. The cabachon stones are crystals which have been foiled and the result is beautiful rose tones in varying hues. The use of foil dates centuries when the need to reflect light was addressed in stones that were closed in the back. It is part of the beauty and uniqueness of early jewelry. It measures a large and dramatic 2 3/4 inches x 2 inches measuring the ring alone. The condition is excellent given the age, with the stones bright and beautiful. There are a few tiny breaks in the silver ring at the edge, from use and not of concern for function or appearance. I have sold only a few penannulars before as they are rare to find, and this is certainly an extraordinary example. Modern, sleek, yet circa 1840. |
