| Extraordinary pair of gold Georgian brooches, circa 1810. Often a pair of bracelets or brooches were presented upon one's engagement. One would be given for an engagement gift and one upon betrothal. Perhaps a gift for two daughters...We could always hypothesize... The gold work is called cannetille, the process of using fine spirals of gold that are twisted to create patterns. It is time consuming and required great skill, therefore only the finest jewelry would incorporate this type of work. In this pair, a fine jeweler created subtle patterns so finely done it has the quality of lace. The stones are citrines beautifully faceted around the perimeter of the stones to reflect light. The bezels are saw tooth with tiny fine prongs used for additional support. The stones are all set in closed backs, typical of the period, which were then set in foil back settings to reflect light. The effect is mesmerizing as the stones have a glow and hue that can only be created by this process. The citrines are highly reflective and mellow. The brooch is dimensional and created in layers. Note the beautiful small citirines encircling the central element. The pair measure 2 inches across and down. The reverse has the original mounts on both brooches. One brooch has a with a beautiful original patina. The reverse reveals original mounts. One brooch has a locket back and the other is missing the bezel and glass. It is exceedingly difficult finding jewelry from this period, but finding a pair is truly a wonderful experience. They could be worn as in seen the photo on a dress, sweater, or coat. They are in every sense a "jewel" circa 1810 and very rare. | |||||||||||||||
