| Rare Georgian Regard brooch, circa 1810. Acrostic jewelry, or the language of stones, was popular during the Georgian and Victorian periods. Hidden words or messages in jewels were given as tokens of endearment, where the initial letter of a stone created the spelling of a word. In this example the stones are Ruby, Emerald, Garnet, Amethyst, Ruby, and Diamond....spelling REGARD. REGARD, a word meaning dear or beloved, was a popular acrostic jewel. This early brooch measures 1 1/2 inches across x 1 inch down. The patina is beautiful and the gold work is superior. The proportions are elegant and the size quite wearable. The reverse has an oval compartment with a bezel set cabachon crystal, which could hold a lock of hair. The original t-bar and c-clasp have been replaced. This brooch is a small sentimental treasure sending a timeless message of love. | ||||||||
