This antique Victorian Scottish agate brooch is circa 1860. Queen Victoria's love of Scotland, its people and its customs was visible in her attire and in the clothing used for her children. In her frequent visits to Balmoral Castle, the children were dressed in tartans. She herself wore the beautiful pieces of jewelry designed to adorn the clothing. The jewelry is unique to Scotland, both in its design and in its use of native stones. Here is a silver brooch in the form of a fibula an ancient form used to secure cloaks. It is designed with inlaid stones so perfectly chosen, that one color flows to the next as if they were born together. It was deliberately designed without any embellishments, such as engraving or gemstones to detract from the simple beauty of the natural colors of the agates. Note the subtle use of two oval Montrose gray cabachon stones as accents. It measures a bold 2 1/2 inches 2/1 inches across and is in excellent, original condition. How striking to find a brooch circa 1860 with such a clean, contemporary design. It is simply beautiful in its simplicity. It looks unique, when worn on a coat, shawl or sweater. |
