This Victorian,Scottish agate brooch is circa 1860. It is designed as a basket weave crated by two colors of agate. The affect is quite beautiful and most unusual. The central agate is actually a striated agate, almost the color of straw. This was a carefully planned and beautifully executed design by a skilled lapidary. The agates are placed on slate backs and then a simple sterling bezel was created. The choice was simplicity of silver work with emphasis on the stones and this was certainly achieved. It measures 1 6/8 inches and is in excellent original condition. It is quite lovely and very wearable. |
