This wonderful French gold brooch is 19th century. It is a painting on ivory en grisaille. The French word for gray is gris, and the definition translates to a monochromatic painting in shades of gray. Quite spectacular, this pin is subtle in color accented with the clearest of paste stones. Each paste in the surround is set in a fine gold prong setting. The ivory is in perfect condition as is the the glass. The back of the pin reveals a c-clasp and all original mounts. The pin measures 1 5/8 inches long x 1 4/8 inches wide. This would look unique secured to a velvet ribbon and worn as a choker, or equally dramatic as a brooch. |
