| This is a rare sterling Scottish brooch, circa 1860 . It is not rare in theme, being a loveknot, but in its design. It has the celtic knot symbolizing everlasting love, a popular theme, but the use of the agates make it most unusual. The appearance is a weave achieved by the blend of the agates. It is a trick of the eye and the illusion was expertly orchestrated. Each agate having mellow shading is inlaid and chosen precisely to achieve the affect of the weave. It measures 2 1/2 inches across x 1 1/2 down. It is in excellent condition, completely original including the mounts. This is celtic jewelry that is truly folk art. It is strikingly modern in its simplicity, and yet was designed in the mid 19th Century. It is a classic! | ||||||
