| This is an interesting ring steeped in history. It is a sepia on ivory and is inscribed on the reverse, Lady Mary Forbes ob: 9th Ap 1782 At:60. This means it is a memorial for a lady of the aristocracy who died at the age of 60, on April 9th 1782. Most memorial rings of this period have urns and portray grief. This sepia shows Lady Forbes as a beautiful young woman with tendrils and a sweet smiling face. In a sense there is a celebration of life, not death. The ring is 9k and is a size 6 1/4. The top is 1 inch long X 3/4 inches wide. The tapered shank is delicately engraved, and the sepia on ivory crisp and clear under the original convex glass. The portrait is superior and must have been rendered by quite an accomplished artist. The condition is excellent. | ||||||||
