This necklace is composed of tumbled clear rock crystals that are caged in beautiful sterling floral wraps. This necklace, known as Pools of Light, is circa 1900. This form of necklace was popular in China and Japan, and held the belief that all the goodness and healing qualities of the crystal are protected if left undrilled. Therefore, they were finely set in silver wire or in floral motifs such as this example. The clear quartz absorbs and reflects light and uniquely illuminates when worn. There is a legend, that these beads originate from the Northern slope of Mount Fujijama where they erupt in springtime due to the alternating freezing and thawing conditions. They find their way into the spring beds and over a period of years they wash down the mountainside tumbled smooth by their journey. They are then finished by lapidaries in the city of Kofu and painstakingly handset by jewelers. Rock crystals, such as these would need to be flawless to be tumbled in the round. Most crystals are faceted, which conceals any internal inclusions. This example is especially fine, as the floral wraps are sterling silver and beautifully chased. Most of these floral designs have lower grade silver content, and I have only had a few set in sterling. All the crystals are clear and bright and any darkness is due to the photography. There is a new and secure sterling spring ring. The necklace measures 16 1/2 inches. The crystals are 12mm-13mm. or approximately 1/2 inch. Condition is excellent. Perfect to complete any outfit, jeans or dress. It has wonderful symbolism, as well as unique beauty. Japan, circa 1900 |
