This cherub necklace rendered in silver, and decorated with garnets is circa 1860. It is finely detailed and very versatile. The chain can be worn with or without the pendant as it can be easily detached with a concealed hook behind the chain.
The pendant designed at the height of the Renaissance Revival, has a three section articulating classical design, with white and black enamel work. The center of the pendant has a winged cherub that is vermeil. The vermeil, a gold wash on the silver is also present on the cherub plaques of the necklace . The perimeter garnets are faceted and the drop is cabochon. The bale is beautifully detailed, and it is centered with a faceted garnet. The pendant has a Vienna pre- 1867 touch mark as well as a makers mark 's on the top front ring. The silver content is Continental, a fineness of 800. The pendant would be striking worn alone on a velvet cord or ribbon, as well as on the chain. The chain measures 21 inches long X 1/2 inches wide. It has a concealed hook on the reverse which attaches to the pendant. The cherub heads are interspersed with small decorative plaques that have bezel set, flat cut garnets. The enamel has some crazing and wear to edges of a few of the garnets. This is visible only with close scrutiny and a jewelers loupe. It retains the original patina and the overall condition is very good. It is distinctive and elegant. Vienna, circa 1860 |
