Victorian jewelry abounds with sentimental items. Lockets were favored to house a special memory, a beloved, a lock of hair. It is the perfect means to freeze a moment in time, and hold it close to your heart. This sterling locket, circa 1880, has a beautiful, rectangular design. The bale and center rose gold panel are solid gold, unusual, as many from this period had a gold wash. The engraving on the panel and bale is expertly hand rendered. The perimeter has small silver "cannonballs" typical of the design period. The rope twists and silver dot details, combine to create a beautiful locket. The locket opens to reveal a place for a photo on one side. It has the original bezel, but the glass is deficient. The bezel is easily removed and a photo of choice can replace the existing picture The locket measures 2 1/4 inches long with the bale X 1 inch across. The locket alone measures 1 3/4 inches X 1 across. There are no marking on the locket, but it has been tested for gold and for silver. The condition is very good to excellent, with some slight depression of perimeter cannonballs. It is not apparent when worn, only on inspection. The sterling chain measures 20 1/2 inches. I personally love wearing lockets, as they continually offer the memory of a treasured moment. It is the perfect accessory. Circa 1880, possibly American. |
