This antique Scottish agate sterling brooch is unique in design and execution. Like all forms of art, few distinguish themselves as unforgettable. One of my personal favorites, this brooch is quite early, circa 1840. It is designed with perfectly chosen agates all melding together in perfect combination of color. Each agate was cut on a curve and carefully inlaid by a highly skilled lapidary. This was done so perfectly that the eye doesn't even see the silver strips that separate each stone. The center of the brooch is the most beautiful, as the foil back faceted crystal rises like a flower bud from a uniquely designed and engraved collet. The crystal picks up a lovely golden hint of color from the foil below. The use of foil during this period was to bring light to a stone that was characteristically closed in the back. It too, adds to its unique beauty. The brooch is completely original and in excellent condition. The reverse has a few tiny, tiny dings, commensurate with age. It measures 2 1/4 inches round. Rare and singularly beautiful, Scotland circa 1840 |
