This gold ring is English, 17th century. It was used by the Stuart followers in support of their King. This ring has a large, bright faceted crystal that is foiled with a deep pink/red color. Below the crystal lies a cypher (twisted gold wire) with the initials CR for Charles Stuart the second, Charles Rex as he preferred, or CR for short. The use of these faceted crystals began as a tradition in the later part of the 17th century. In this example the crystal is very bright as the facets reflect and intensify the light. The shank is carved and there is some small remnants of black enamel. The high carat gold has a glorious patina, as expected of hand worked gold from this period. It is a size 8.5 US. It is completely original and in outstanding condition. A pleasure to sell and a privilege to own. The other rings pictured on the hand are for comparison and presently in inventory. Wonderful and rare... England, circa 1690. |
