This classical moonstone necklace is circa 1890. It has seven flowers designed with claw set cabachon moonstones alternating with similarly set single moonstones. The moonstones are clear and have the desirable flashes of blue. Not to be confused with the rainbow moonstones in modern jewelry, these early mined stones are quite rare to find today as most of the mines have been virtually depleted. The moonstones are set on a foxtail chain and terminate with an original S clasp. It measures 15.5 inches long. The central flower measures 7/8 inches. The gold is 9k with a high carat gilding creating a beautiful patina. There are two early repairs to the bezel of the small stones, evident with a loop, not visible when worn. It lays gracefully on the neck and can be worn for casual or formal wear. Rare to find with a flower motif, most Victorian necklaces have drops or single set stones. Victorian, circa 1890. |
