This is a superb example of a Victorian silver cuff bangle bracelet, circa 1880. This motif of a strap and buckle was very popular during this period and was found on brooches, lockets, earrings as well as on bracelets. This particular design is unusual in its execution, as the strap is realistically designed with a sweeping curve as it passes through the buckle. It is finely hand engraved with leaves which dramatically contrasts with the plain silver work. Of note, is the single, engraved, vertical fern to denote the position where the clasp opens. It is a singular detail, finely and cleverly done by the engraver. With pressure on a small lever button, the bracelet opens and closes with a secure concealed clasp. The back of the bracelet is unadorned, a typical characteristic of this period of design. The bracelet measures 7 1/2 inches on the interior perimeter x 1 1/4 inches wide. Larger than many of this period, it will accommodate an average to larger wrist. The condition is excellent with only a very tiny area of surface scratching near the clasp. Unusual to find one in such fine condition and bold size. English, circa 1880. |
