Finding authentic Victorian earrings is a challenge for the collector and for the dealer alike. This is a pair of Victorian Scottish agate Montrose gray earrings. The earrings, circa 1880 are designed with a garter motif very popular in Scottish and English jewelry. It is a strap and buckle inlaid with beautiful gray agates indigenous to Scotland. The strap and buckle, a rendition of the Order of The Garter, was an English Order of chivalry that dates back to Medieval Times. Queen Victoria wore an amulet at her wedding bearing its motto. Her love of Scotland and Balmoral Castle, encouraged the motif to be popularized in the jewelry. The earrings measure 1 5/8 from the top of the wire x 5/8 across. The condition is excellent. Lovely with Scottish agate jewelry or with Victorian silver. Scotland, circa 1880 |
