This is an exceptionally fine example of a long niello chain. Niello is the art of fusing metals into incised metal creating patterns. In these links, the pattern is subtle striping. It is in superb condition, with a beautiful design of alternating geometric links of niello, with those of rose gold vermeil. This is an impressive antique niello chain,circa 1890. Niello, is the term used to describe the fusion of silver,copper,lead and sulphur poured into designs that were incised in silver. (See Ginny Dawes, Victorian Jewelry p.48). The metal of choice was silver, and it was usually a lower grade 800, which withstood the firing process.
