This Victorian sterling locket is circa 1880. It is very simple in design bearing an asymmetrical strap and buckle motif. This motif was very popular during this period in keeping with Queen Victoria's Order Of The Garter. It appeared on bracelets, brooches and earrings. This lorgnette, is silver designed with the process of Niello. This process was used for centuries, but had renewed interest in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. According to the book Victorian Jewelry by Dawes and Davidov, "niello is a process in which a fusion of silver,copper,lead and sulphur is melted and poured on silver." The nineteenth century English silversmiths had distinctive artistry. The jewelry was hand engraved, often with flowers and tiny silver "bullets" decorated the perimeter.
