This Victorian sterling locket is circa 1880. It is very simple in design bearing an asymmetrical strap and buckle motif. This motif was very popular during this period in keeping with Queen Victoria's Order Of The Garter. It appeared on bracelets, brooches and earrings. Replicating a leaf in autumn, with changing colors, each agate is hand chosen for color, cut,polished, placed on slate and then framed in sterling. According to the book Victorian Jewelry by Dawes and Davidov, "niello is a process in which a fusion of silver,copper,lead and sulphur is melted and poured on silver."
