This unusual Victorian silver bangle bracelet is circa 1880. The buckle motif was very popular during this period and this example is detailed and bold. The distinguishing feature is not only the buckle, but the "rippling" design of the strap. The hand engraving is well done and the bracelet opens with a concealed, secure push clasp. This lorgnette, is silver designed with the process of Niello. This process was used for centuries, but had renewed interest in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. According to the book Victorian Jewelry by Dawes and Davidov, "niello is a process in which a fusion of silver,copper,lead and sulphur is melted and poured on silver."
