These gold amethyst and natural pearl earrings are circa 1830. Formally, stud buttons, they were beautifully converted to earrings. The amethyst are a deep violet color and have a rich hue created by the foil placed below the stone. This process was done in jewelry that had stones closed in the back to the light. Small Georgian brooches like this one have timeless appeal. This example circa 1820, is especially well done, designed with a perimeter of alternating natural pearls and garnets. The garnets are all set in crimped rub over mounts and foiled back. They are set closed back, and the foiling placed below the stone creates a mellow and beautiful reflection of light. Each garnet has a slightly different hue, some lighter and some darker. It is that variation of color that gives the early Georgian jew ...click for details

Extraordinary pair of gold Georgian brooches, circa 1810. Often a pair of bracelets or brooches were presented upon one's engagement. One would be given for an engagement gift and one upon betrothal. Perhaps a gift for two daughters...We could always hypothesize... The gold work is called cannetille, the process of using fine spirals of gold that are twisted to create patterns. It is time consuming and required great skill, therefore only the finest jewelry would incorporate this type of work ...click for details

This lovely pin is Georgian, circa 1820. It has a round shape which is more unusual for brooches of this genre. The flat cut garnets are all finely faceted around the perimeter and set in hand crimped rub over settings. Stones were set closed in the back during this time period, therefore closed to the light and foil was placed behind each garnet to reflect light. The result is a garnet with tones of ruby and beautiful variations of color as light reflects on the stones. Around the central garne ...click for details

These antique diamond earrings are Flemish, circa 1790. Set in silver and backed in gold, they have a beautiful patina. The diamonds are rough cuts, typical of the period and set in tiny pockets of silver. The diamonds are foiled back to reflect light, and the silver is then hand crimped around each stone. The earrings have two sections that articulate, and a central section which moves as well. They are completely original including the wires, which is most unusual.
