This brooch is Scottish, circa 1860. It is wonderful figural interpretation of a bow crafted by a true artisan. Most 19th century Scottish brooches have traditional designs, and few were creatively expressive. Antique Scottish brooches are becoming scarce, but finding a figural brooch such as this is rare indeed. All the agates were cut and shaped like a true ribbon. The photo does not capture the finesse of the lapidary nor the beauty of the choice of agates. Notice the blend of color and the m ...click for details

This Victorian,Scottish agate brooch is circa 1860. It is designed as a basket weave crated by two colors of agate. The affect is quite beautiful and most unusual. The central agate is actually a striated agate, almost the color of straw. This was a carefully planned and beautifully executed design by a skilled lapidary. The agates are placed on slate backs and then a simple sterling bezel was created. The choice was simplicity of silver work with emphasis on the stones and this was certainly ac ...click for details
