This long, beautiful niello chain is circa 1890. The process of niello is actually a fusion of metals, among them copper, silver, lead and sulphur. This fusion, was then poured into silver that had been designed with groves/patterns. The geometric motifs, similar to this chain were often French. The metal used was 800 silver, as it was better than sterling when used with this process. More information can be found in the book on Victorian jewelry by Dawes and Davidov, page 52. ...click for details

It has hallmarks on the reverse for Birmingham, 1898 and a maker's mark of AER. The beautiful sterling chain has links accented with textured tops.
